About the NFL 2023 season
The 2023 NFL season was the 104th season of the National Football League, featuring 32 teams competing across the AFC and NFC. The regular season began in September 2023 and concluded in January 2024, before the NFL Playoffs culminated with Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in February 2024.
The Kansas City Chiefs were crowned Super Bowl champions for the second consecutive season. After finishing the regular season with an 11-6 record and winning the AFC West, Kansas City defeated the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round before recording road victories over the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to reach their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons.
The San Francisco 49ers represented the NFC after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record and securing the number one seed in the conference. San Francisco defeated the Green Bay Packers 24-21 in the Divisional Round before overcoming a 17-point half-time deficit to beat the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship Game.
Super Bowl LVIII saw Kansas City face San Francisco at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Chiefs won 25-22 in overtime, with Patrick Mahomes finding Mecole Hardman for the game-winning touchdown. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time in his career as Kansas City secured its third championship in five seasons.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was named AP NFL Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career after helping Baltimore finish 13-4 and claim the AFC's number one seed. San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett won Defensive Player of the Year. Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was named Offensive Rookie of the Year following an impressive debut season.
The 2023 season featured several memorable storylines across the league. The Detroit Lions won the NFC North and recorded their first playoff victory since the 1991 season before reaching the NFC Championship Game. Houston also enjoyed a major turnaround under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans, winning the AFC South and reaching the Divisional Round with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud.
The season ultimately belonged to Kansas City. The Chiefs became the first team since the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons to win consecutive Super Bowls, strengthening a remarkable run that had already established Kansas City as one of the defining teams of the era.
