The 2024 Major League Baseball season featured 30 teams competing across the American League and National League. The regular season began in March 2024 and continued through September, with each team scheduled to play 162 games before the MLB Postseason determined the two teams that would contest the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers were crowned World Series champions after finishing the regular season with an MLB-best 98-64 record. The Dodgers won the National League West and entered the postseason as the number one seed in the National League, beginning a playoff run that would ultimately deliver the franchise's eighth World Series championship. Los Angeles faced the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series and recovered from a 2-1 series deficit to win the final two games and advance. The Dodgers then defeated the New York Mets 4-2 in the National League Championship Series to secure their place in the World Series. The New York Yankees represented the American League after finishing the regular season with a 94-68 record and winning the AL East. The Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in the Division Series before overcoming the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 in the American League Championship Series. Their victory sent New York to the World Series for the first time since 2009. The 2024 World Series brought together two of baseball's most famous franchises, with the Dodgers and Yankees meeting in the Fall Classic for the 12th time. Los Angeles won the opening three games before New York responded in Game 4. The Dodgers then completed a 4-1 series victory with a 7-6 win at Yankee Stadium in Game 5. Freddie Freeman was named World Series MVP after an outstanding performance for the Dodgers. His defining moment came in Game 1, when he hit a walk-off grand slam in the tenth inning to give Los Angeles a 6-3 victory. Freeman homered in each of the first four games of the series and finished the World Series with 12 runs batted in. The season was also notable for the extraordinary debut campaign of Shohei Ohtani with the Dodgers. Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to record at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season, finishing with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. He was unanimously named National League MVP, while Yankees star Aaron Judge was unanimously named American League MVP after hitting 58 home runs and driving in 144 runs. The 2024 postseason began with the Wild Card Series before progressing through the American and National League Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series.
