About the NBA 2023–24 season

The 2023/24 NBA season was the 78th season of the National Basketball Association, featuring 30 teams competing across the Eastern and Western Conferences. The regular season began in October 2023 and concluded in April 2024, before the NBA Playoffs culminated with the NBA Finals in June 2024. The Boston Celtics were crowned NBA champions after an outstanding campaign in which they finished the regular season with a league-best 64-18 record. Boston secured the number one seed in the Eastern Conference and entered the playoffs with the best record in the NBA. The Celtics defeated the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers in the opening two rounds of the playoffs before sweeping the Indiana Pacers 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The victory sent Boston to the NBA Finals for the second time in three seasons. The Dallas Mavericks represented the Western Conference after finishing the regular season with a 50-32 record. Led by Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, Dallas defeated the Los Angeles Clippers and top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder before overcoming the Minnesota Timberwolves 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals. The 2024 NBA Finals saw Boston face Dallas in a best-of-seven championship series. The Celtics won the opening three games before Dallas responded with victory in Game 4. Boston then returned to TD Garden for Game 5, where a 106-88 victory secured a 4-1 series win and the NBA championship. Jaylen Brown was named NBA Finals MVP after playing a crucial role throughout Boston's postseason campaign. Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum also enjoyed an outstanding playoff run, leading Boston in points, rebounds and assists during the Finals as the team's depth helped deliver the championship. Denver Nuggets centre Nikola Jokić was named NBA Most Valuable Player for the third time in four seasons. Jokić averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game during the regular season as defending champions Denver finished with a 57-25 record. The season also marked the arrival of Victor Wembanyama in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs centre was named Rookie of the Year after an exceptional debut campaign, while Minnesota Timberwolves centre Rudy Gobert won Defensive Player of the Year for the fourth time. Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault was named Coach of the Year after guiding his young team to the number one seed in the Western Conference. The 2023/24 campaign also featured the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament. The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers 123-109 in the championship game in Las Vegas, with LeBron James named tournament MVP. The competition would subsequently be renamed the NBA Cup. The season ultimately belonged to Boston. The Celtics went 16-3 during the playoffs and claimed the 18th NBA championship in franchise history, moving ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in NBA history.
