The 2025/26 EFL Championship was the 22nd season of the competition under its current name, featuring 24 clubs competing across 552 regular-season matches between August 2025 and May 2026. Clubs battled for promotion to the Premier League, a place in the Championship play-offs and survival in one of the most competitive divisions in English football.
Coventry City were crowned Championship champions after an outstanding campaign under Frank Lampard, finishing top of the table with 95 points. The Sky Blues secured their return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, while Ipswich Town finished second with 84 points to claim the other automatic promotion place.
The battle for the play-offs remained competitive until the final day of the regular season. Millwall finished third, followed by Southampton, Middlesbrough and Hull City. Hull went on to secure the third and final promotion place, beating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium and earning promotion to the Premier League.
At the other end of the table, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Oxford United were relegated to League One. Sheffield Wednesday's season was significantly affected by points deductions, while Leicester suffered a second successive relegation following their drop from the Premier League the previous season. Oxford's two-season stay in the Championship also came to an end.
The season produced several memorable storylines, led by Coventry City's return to the top flight after a 25-year absence. Ipswich also secured another promotion under Kieran McKenna, while the fight for the play-off positions continued until the final round of fixtures. The campaign demonstrated once again the unpredictable nature of the Championship, with promotion and relegation battles developing throughout the 46-game season.
