The 2013/14 Premier League was the 22nd season of the Premier League, featuring 20 clubs competing across 380 matches between August 2013 and May 2014. The campaign produced a memorable three-way title race involving Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, with the championship remaining undecided until the final day. Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions, securing their second title in three seasons and their fourth English top-flight championship overall. Manuel Pellegrini's side finished with 86 points, two ahead of Liverpool, after winning 27 of their 38 league matches and scoring an impressive 102 goals. Liverpool emerged as serious title contenders under Brendan Rodgers after finishing seventh the previous season. Led by the prolific partnership of Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool embarked on an 11-match winning run during the second half of the campaign and moved into a commanding position in the title race with only a few matches remaining. The momentum shifted when Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield in late April. Liverpool then surrendered a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace to draw 3-3 at Selhurst Park, allowing Manchester City to take control of the championship race. City defeated Aston Villa 4-0 in their penultimate match before a 2-0 victory over West Ham United on the final day secured the title. Chelsea finished third in José Mourinho's first season back at Stamford Bridge, while Arsenal took fourth place and secured Champions League qualification. Everton enjoyed an impressive campaign under Roberto Martínez, finishing fifth with 72 points, while Tottenham Hotspur completed the top six. Luis Suárez was the outstanding individual performer of the season. The Liverpool striker scored 31 Premier League goals despite missing the opening five matches of the campaign, winning the Golden Boot and being named both PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. Remarkably, none of his 31 league goals came from penalties. The season also marked the beginning of a new era at Manchester United following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. David Moyes took charge but was dismissed in April as the defending champions endured a difficult campaign. United eventually finished seventh with 64 points, missing out on European qualification and recording their lowest Premier League finish at the time. At the bottom of the table, Cardiff City, Fulham and Norwich City were relegated to the Championship. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, produced an impressive recovery under Tony Pulis, climbing away from the relegation zone to finish 11th after appearing in serious danger earlier in the season.
