The 2014/15 Premier League was the 23rd season of the Premier League, featuring 20 clubs competing across 380 matches between August 2014 and May 2015. Chelsea dominated the title race for much of the campaign, eventually securing their first Premier League championship for five years. Chelsea were crowned Premier League champions, winning their fourth Premier League title and fifth English top-flight championship overall. José Mourinho's side finished the season with 87 points, eight ahead of second-placed Manchester City, after losing only three of their 38 league matches. The Blues established themselves at the top of the table early in the campaign and remained there throughout the season. A 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on 3 May 2015 mathematically secured the championship with three matches remaining, with Eden Hazard scoring the decisive goal. Manchester City finished second with 79 points after being unable to successfully defend the championship they had won the previous season. Arsenal took third place, while Manchester United finished fourth in Louis van Gaal's first season in charge and returned to the Champions League places after finishing seventh a year earlier. Eden Hazard was one of the outstanding players of the campaign, scoring 14 Premier League goals and playing a central role in Chelsea's title success. The Belgian was named PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. Chelsea striker Diego Costa also enjoyed an impressive first season in English football, scoring 20 league goals following his arrival from Atlético Madrid. Manchester City's Sergio Agüero won the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 26 goals, finishing ahead of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane on 21. Kane's breakthrough was one of the major stories of the season, with the academy graduate establishing himself as Tottenham's leading striker and winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Southampton also enjoyed an impressive campaign under Ronald Koeman. Despite losing several important players during the previous summer, the Saints finished seventh with 60 points and secured European football. Swansea City recorded their highest Premier League points total, finishing eighth with 56 points. At the other end of the table, Hull City, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers were relegated to the Championship. Leicester City produced a remarkable escape from relegation after spending much of the season at the bottom of the table. Nigel Pearson's side won six of their final eight matches to finish 14th, setting the stage for an extraordinary campaign the following season. The 2014/15 season ultimately belonged to Chelsea. Mourinho's team combined a strong defensive record with the attacking quality of Hazard, Costa and Cesc Fàbregas to lead the Premier League from the opening weeks of the campaign and reclaim the championship for the first time since 2009/10.
