The 2024/25 NHL season was the 108th season of operation of the National Hockey League, featuring 32 teams competing across the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team played an 82-game regular-season schedule before the top teams advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, culminating with the Stanley Cup Final in June 2025. The Florida Panthers were crowned Stanley Cup champions for the second consecutive season. After finishing third in the Atlantic Division with a 47-31-4 record, Florida defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round of the playoffs before overcoming the Toronto Maple Leafs in a seven-game second-round series. The Panthers then faced the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final, winning the series 4-1 to reach the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive season. Waiting for them were the Edmonton Oilers, creating a rematch of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, which Florida had won in seven games. Edmonton reached the Final after another impressive postseason campaign. The Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars to win the Western Conference and earn another opportunity to capture their first Stanley Cup since 1990. The 2025 Stanley Cup Final began with Edmonton winning an overtime thriller before Florida responded to level the series. The Panthers eventually took control and secured a 4-2 series victory, clinching the championship with a 5-1 win in Game 6 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. Sam Reinhart scored four goals in the decisive Game 6 victory, becoming the first player since Maurice Richard in 1957 to score four goals in a Stanley Cup Final game. Panthers forward Sam Bennett was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after scoring 15 goals during Florida's postseason run. The Winnipeg Jets produced the best regular-season record in the NHL, finishing 56-22-4 with 116 points to win the Presidents' Trophy. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin also made history during the season, scoring his 895th career regular-season goal to surpass Wayne Gretzky and become the NHL's all-time leading goalscorer. Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl led the NHL with 52 regular-season goals to win the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, while Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading points scorer. Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player following an outstanding regular season. The 2024/25 season ultimately belonged to Florida. By defeating Edmonton for a second consecutive year, the Panthers became the NHL's first repeat Stanley Cup champions since the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021 and established themselves as one of the dominant teams of the era.
