The 2022 Formula 1 season was the 73rd season of the FIA Formula One World Championship, featuring 22 Grands Prix across five continents. The championship began with the Bahrain Grand Prix in March and concluded with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. Max Verstappen was crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the second consecutive season. The Red Bull driver finished the campaign with 454 points, 146 ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, after producing a dominant second half of the season. Verstappen won 15 of the 22 Grands Prix, setting a new record at the time for the most victories by a driver in a single Formula 1 season. After retiring from two of the opening three races, Verstappen recovered to establish a commanding championship lead and secured the title at the Japanese Grand Prix with four races remaining. The season initially appeared set to produce a close championship battle between Red Bull and Ferrari. Charles Leclerc won two of the opening three races in Bahrain and Australia, but reliability problems, strategic mistakes and Red Bull's improving performance gradually shifted the championship in Verstappen's favour. Leclerc eventually finished second in the Drivers' Championship with three victories. Red Bull also secured the Constructors' Championship, ending Mercedes' run of eight consecutive constructors' titles. Sergio Pérez contributed two victories in Monaco and Singapore and finished third in the Drivers' Championship, helping Red Bull claim their first Constructors' Championship since 2013. The 2022 season introduced one of the most significant changes to Formula 1's technical regulations in decades. A new generation of cars was designed around ground-effect aerodynamics, with the aim of allowing drivers to follow each other more closely and improving opportunities for overtaking. Mercedes endured a challenging start to the new regulations after dominating much of the previous decade. George Russell finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship during his first full season with the team and claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory at the São Paulo Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth and, for the first time in his Formula 1 career, completed a season without a Grand Prix victory. Ferrari returned to regular race-winning contention after two difficult seasons. Leclerc won in Bahrain, Australia and Austria, while teammate Carlos Sainz secured his first Formula 1 victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Ferrari finished second in the Constructors' Championship ahead of Mercedes. The calendar also saw Formula 1 return to several venues after disruption during the previous two seasons. The Australian, Canadian, Japanese and Singapore Grands Prix all returned, while the inaugural Miami Grand Prix introduced a new race around the Miami International Autodrome in Florida.
