The 2015/16 Premier League was the 24th season of the Premier League, featuring 20 clubs competing across 380 matches between August 2015 and May 2016. Clubs battled for the league title, European qualification and survival in one of the world's most competitive football competitions. Leicester City were crowned Premier League champions, completing one of the greatest sporting stories of all time. Having narrowly avoided relegation the previous season and started the campaign as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title, Claudio Ranieri's side defied expectations to win their first English top-flight championship. Leicester finished ten points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, while Tottenham Hotspur finished third and Manchester City secured fourth place and UEFA Champions League qualification. At the other end of the table, Newcastle United, Norwich City and Aston Villa were relegated to the Championship. Aston Villa endured a particularly difficult campaign, finishing bottom with just 17 points and ending a 28-year continuous stay in the English top flight. Newcastle were relegated despite the late-season appointment of Rafael Benítez, while Sunderland once again secured Premier League survival. Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane claimed the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 25 goals, finishing ahead of Leicester's Jamie Vardy and Manchester City's Sergio Agüero, who both scored 24. Leicester's Riyad Mahrez was named PFA Players' Player of the Year after contributing 17 goals and 11 assists, while teammate Jamie Vardy was named Premier League Player of the Season. Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech won the Golden Glove after keeping 16 clean sheets. The season will forever be remembered for Leicester City's extraordinary title triumph. Vardy scored in a record 11 consecutive Premier League matches, while the combination of Vardy, Mahrez, N'Golo Kanté and captain Wes Morgan helped transform Leicester from relegation candidates into champions. The title was confirmed on 2 May 2016 when Tottenham surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, sparking celebrations in Leicester and around the football world.
