The 2016/17 Premier League was the 25th season of the Premier League, featuring 20 clubs competing across 380 matches between August 2016 and May 2017. Clubs battled for the league title, European qualification and survival in one of the world's most competitive football competitions. Chelsea were crowned Premier League champions in Antonio Conte's first season in charge, securing their fifth Premier League title and sixth English league championship overall. After switching to a 3-4-3 formation following a difficult start to the campaign, Chelsea embarked on a remarkable 13-match winning run and ultimately finished seven points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester City finished third, while Liverpool secured fourth place and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. At the other end of the table, Hull City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland were relegated to the Championship. Sunderland finished bottom, bringing their ten-year stay in the Premier League to an end, while Middlesbrough were relegated after just one season back in the top flight. Hull fought for survival into the closing weeks of the campaign but ultimately joined them in the Championship. Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane claimed the Premier League Golden Boot for the second consecutive season after scoring 29 goals in just 30 appearances. Chelsea's N'Golo Kanté was named Premier League Player of the Season following an outstanding campaign at the heart of Conte's midfield. Tottenham's Christian Eriksen and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne finished joint-top of the assists chart with 15 each, while Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois won the Golden Glove after keeping 16 clean sheets. The season marked an impressive transformation for Chelsea, who went from finishing tenth in 2015/16 to Premier League champions a year later. Tottenham also enjoyed an outstanding campaign, recording 86 points and going unbeaten at White Hart Lane during their final season at the historic stadium. The campaign was also Pep Guardiola's first in English football, with Manchester City finishing third in his debut Premier League season.
