The 2018/19 Premier League was the 27th season of the Premier League, featuring 20 clubs competing across 380 matches between August 2018 and May 2019. Clubs battled for the league title, European qualification and survival in one of the world's most competitive football competitions. Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions, successfully defending their title after an extraordinary battle with Liverpool that went down to the final day of the season. Pep Guardiola's side finished with 98 points, just one ahead of Liverpool on 97, after winning their final 14 league matches. Chelsea finished third, while Tottenham Hotspur claimed fourth place and the final UEFA Champions League qualification spot. At the other end of the table, Cardiff City, Fulham and Huddersfield Town were relegated to the Championship. Huddersfield finished bottom after winning just three league matches, while Fulham returned to the Championship after only one season in the top flight. Cardiff fought for survival until the closing stages of the campaign but ultimately finished five points behind Brighton & Hove Albion. Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shared the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring 22 goals each. Chelsea's Eden Hazard claimed the Golden Playmaker award after providing 15 assists, while Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson won the Golden Glove with 21 clean sheets in his first Premier League season. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was named Premier League Player of the Season following an outstanding campaign at the heart of the league's best defence. The season featured one of the greatest title races in Premier League history, with Manchester City and Liverpool combining for an extraordinary 195 points. Liverpool lost only one league match all season but still finished as runners-up, recording what was then the highest points total by a team that had failed to win the English top-flight title. The campaign also marked the end of an era at Arsenal, with Unai Emery taking charge following Arsène Wenger's departure after 22 years as manager.
