The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th edition of the men's FIFA World Cup and took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. It was the first FIFA World Cup ever hosted on the African continent and featured 32 national teams competing across 64 matches. Spain won the tournament for the first time in their history, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final thanks to an iconic 116th-minute goal from Andrés Iniesta. Spain finished the tournament with six wins from seven matches, recovering from an opening defeat to Switzerland before eliminating Portugal, Paraguay and Germany in the knockout stages. The Netherlands reached the final after winning all six of their previous matches, including victories over Brazil and Uruguay. The tournament also featured some of the world's biggest football stars, including David Villa, Xavi, Wesley Sneijder, Thomas Müller, Diego Forlán and Lionel Messi. Thomas Müller won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer with five goals, while Diego Forlán received the Golden Ball as the competition's best player.
